Understanding autism assessment in the UK

How the NHS pathway is structured and where private and Right to Choose options fit in.

Whether you are exploring an autism assessment for yourself, your child, or someone you care for, it helps to know how the NHS pathway is structured and where private options fit in. Autism assessment in the UK is a careful, multi-disciplinary process — usually involving a specialist clinician, structured interviews, developmental history and, for children, input from school or nursery. It is not something a GP can carry out alone, but your GP plays a key role in starting the referral.

NHS autism assessment waiting times vary widely across England. National guidance recommends that an assessment should begin within around three months of referral, but in many areas the real wait is significantly longer for both adults and children. That gap is what drives many people to ask about Right to Choose or about a private autism assessment. Both routes are legitimate and both have trade-offs, which the guides below set out in plain terms.

Right to Choose is a legal right that lets eligible patients in England choose an alternative NHS-funded provider for their first outpatient appointment. It applies to autism assessments where a recognised Right to Choose provider has an NHS contract for that service. Your GP still needs to agree the referral is clinically appropriate, and access can be affected by the 2026/27 NHS Payment Scheme, which introduces ICB-level caps on Right to Choose spend that may limit how quickly new patients are taken on. We try to be honest about that rather than imply it is an automatic shortcut.

Private autism diagnosis is usually faster but comes at a cost, and post-diagnostic NHS support is not always guaranteed. The guides cover what a good private assessment should include, how NHS recognition usually works in practice, and what to look for in a clinician — whether you are weighing this up for yourself or for a child waiting on a CAMHS list.
