How do you get weight loss medication on the NHS?
If you're eligible and can get a place on an NHS weight management service or diabetes pathway, the medication itself costs very little. You'll pay the standard NHS prescription charge of £9.90 per item in England, or nothing at all in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
However, NHS access to GLP-1 medications is limited and rolling out slowly:
- NICE recommends Mounjaro on the NHS for adults with a BMI of 35 or above (32.5 or above for some ethnic groups) plus at least one weight-related health condition. However, access is being phased in, so the first patients being invited are those with the greatest clinical need, typically a higher BMI plus four or more related conditions. Wider rollout to everyone who meets the full NICE criteria could take up to 12 years, according to NHS England's own planning figures.
- Wegovy on the NHS requires a referral to a specialist (Tier 3 or 4) weight management service, a BMI of 35 or above (32.5 or above for some ethnic groups) plus at least one weight-related health condition, or a BMI of 30 to 34.9 if you meet the criteria for referral to a specialist service. Availability and waiting times vary significantly by area, some local areas have paused new referrals, and waits can run well over 12 months in places.
- NHS-funded treatment can also be time-limited. Wegovy is capped at two years under current NICE guidance, and your specialist team reviews your progress against weight loss targets to decide whether to continue. Mounjaro doesn't currently have this two-year cap, though your care team will still review your progress.
- Foundayo is not currently available on the NHS, and a NICE decision is pending with no confirmed date*. Liraglutide (Saxenda/Nevolat) is available on the NHS only through specialist weight management services under NICE TA664, for a narrower group of patients than Mounjaro or Wegovy*.
If NHS access isn't realistic for you right now, or your area hasn't started prescribing yet, private treatment is likely your best route.

Private weight loss injection and pill prices by medication
Private prices vary a lot, and not just by medication. Dose, provider, and what's bundled into the price all make a difference. Here's the general picture for 2026.

How much does Mounjaro cost in the UK? Price by dose
Private prices for Mounjaro (tirzepatide) typically range from around £120 to £350 a month, depending on dose*. Lower doses used earlier in treatment tend to sit at the bottom of that range, while higher maintenance doses sit at the top. Wholesale prices rose sharply in September 2025, which pushed most providers' prices up*. Over a full year, including dose changes over time, total medication costs typically fall somewhere between £1,800 and £3,600*.
How much do Wegovy injections cost in the UK? Price by dose
Private prices for Wegovy (semaglutide) typically range from around £100 to £300 a month, depending on dose*. As with Mounjaro, doses used earlier in treatment are generally cheaper than the higher maintenance doses used later, with the exact schedule set by your prescriber. A new higher-strength dose was approved by the MHRA in January 2026 for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, priced from roughly £250 to £340 a month*. Over a full year, medication costs typically total £1,800 to £3,600*.
How much do Wegovy pills cost in the UK? Price by dose
An oral version of Wegovy was approved by the MHRA for use in the UK on 11 June 2026*. Early pricing is similar to the injection, starting from around £129 a month*. NHS access requires a separate NICE assessment, which hasn't yet concluded. Some estimates suggest this is unlikely before 2027, though NICE hasn't published an official timeline*.
How much does Foundayo cost in the UK? Price by dose
Foundayo (orforglipron) is a once-daily tablet approved by the MHRA on 10 August 2026 for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27-30 with a weight-related condition. Private prices typically range from around £95 a month at the starting dose to £160-£205 a month at the highest dose*. As a newly launched medication, prices may still change as more providers begin offering it.
How much does Saxenda cost in the UK? Price by dose
Saxenda (liraglutide) is an older, once-daily GLP-1 injection. Branded Saxenda is currently long-term out of stock at most UK pharmacies*. Nevolat, a generic version of liraglutide, has sometimes replaced it and typically costs £155 to £280 a month at the maintenance dose*. This is generally similar to or slightly cheaper than Mounjaro and Wegovy, though liraglutide tends to produce less weight loss than the newer weekly injections*.

Hidden costs of weight loss injections
The pen price is rarely the full story. Before you compare providers on headline price alone, check what's included and what isn't.
- Initial consultation. Some providers bundle this into the medication price. Others charge separately, anywhere from £10 to £150*.
- Follow-up reviews. Ongoing clinical checks are sometimes charged monthly on top of the medication, typically £15 to £100 depending on the provider*. Over a year, this can add several hundred pounds*.
- Pen needles. Mounjaro pens need compatible needles that aren't always included. Where they're charged separately, expect around £5 to £10 a month*.
- Sharps bin. You need somewhere safe to dispose of used needles. Some providers include one with your first order, others charge £3 to £5*.
- Delivery. These medications need temperature-controlled packaging, so delivery isn't always free. Where it's charged, it's usually £3 to £8*.
Before you commit to a provider, ask for the total monthly cost including consultation, needles, sharps disposal and delivery, not just the price of the pen. A cheaper headline price can end up costing more once everything is added.
Many people continue on a maintenance dose for months or years, so factor that in to your total cost too.
