    ADHD services — the landscape

    NHS assessment

NHS ADHD assessment is usually accessed through a GP referral to a specialist service. Waiting times vary significantly between areas and can be long.

    Right to Choose

Eligible patients in England may be able to choose an alternative NHS-funded provider through Right to Choose. Availability depends on your Integrated Care Board.

    Private assessment

Private ADHD assessment is another route, usually with shorter waits. Costs and follow-up arrangements, including medication and shared care, differ by provider.

Good to know about mental health

Not always. NHS Talking Therapies (IAPT) accepts self-referrals for common issues like anxiety and depression — no GP visit needed. For specialist NHS care (CMHT, psychiatry) you usually do need a GP referral. Private therapists and psychiatrists accept patients directly.
