    OCD services — the landscape

    NHS Talking Therapies

You can refer yourself to NHS Talking Therapies for OCD. Services should offer CBT with exposure and response prevention (ERP), though OCD expertise varies by service.

    Specialist NHS care

For moderate to severe OCD, your GP can refer you to a community mental health team or, in some areas, a specialist OCD service with access to psychiatric input.

    Private therapy

Private therapists who specialise in ERP can offer faster access and dedicated expertise. Check that a therapist is specifically trained in ERP, not general counselling.

Good to know about mental health

Not always. NHS Talking Therapies (IAPT) accepts self-referrals for common issues like anxiety and depression — no GP visit needed. For specialist NHS care (CMHT, psychiatry) you usually do need a GP referral. Private therapists and psychiatrists accept patients directly.
