    Anxiety services — the landscape

    NHS Talking Therapies

For mild to moderate anxiety you can refer yourself to NHS Talking Therapies without seeing your GP. Services offer CBT, guided self-help and group programmes.

    Specialist NHS care

For more severe or complex anxiety, your GP can refer you to a community mental health team for specialist assessment, therapy or psychiatric input.

    Private therapy

Private therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists usually offer shorter waits and more choice over the therapist and therapy type. Costs differ by provider.

Good to know about mental health

Not always. NHS Talking Therapies (IAPT) accepts self-referrals for common issues like anxiety and depression — no GP visit needed. For specialist NHS care (CMHT, psychiatry) you usually do need a GP referral. Private therapists and psychiatrists accept patients directly.
