    PTSD services — the landscape

    NHS Talking Therapies

You can refer yourself to NHS Talking Therapies for PTSD. NICE recommends trauma-focused CBT and EMDR, although the availability of EMDR varies by area.

    Specialist trauma services

For complex PTSD, your GP can refer you to a specialist trauma service or community mental health team, which may offer a longer, phased approach to therapy.

    Private therapy

Private trauma therapists can offer faster access and more choice, including intensive formats. Look for accredited training in trauma-focused CBT or EMDR.

Good to know about mental health

Not always. NHS Talking Therapies (IAPT) accepts self-referrals for common issues like anxiety and depression — no GP visit needed. For specialist NHS care (CMHT, psychiatry) you usually do need a GP referral. Private therapists and psychiatrists accept patients directly.
