Eating disorder services — the landscape

    NHS specialist services

Eating disorders are treated by specialist NHS services rather than general talking therapies. Access is usually through a GP referral, with separate adult and young people's teams.

    Recommended treatments

The right treatment depends on the eating disorder. NICE recommends specific approaches such as CBT-ED, MANTRA, SSCM and guided self-help, often alongside dietetic support.

    Private care

Private eating disorder services can offer faster access to specialist clinicians, and in some cases day or residential programmes. Costs and intensity differ by provider.

Good to know about mental health

Not always. NHS Talking Therapies (IAPT) accepts self-referrals for common issues like anxiety and depression — no GP visit needed. For specialist NHS care (CMHT, psychiatry) you usually do need a GP referral. Private therapists and psychiatrists accept patients directly.
