Autism services — the landscape
NHS assessment
NHS autism assessment is accessed through a GP referral to a specialist diagnostic team. Waits are among the longest in mental healthcare and vary by area.
Right to Choose
Some areas in England commission autism assessment through Right to Choose, but this pathway is less established than for ADHD and depends on your Integrated Care Board.
Private assessment
Private autism assessment is usually available without a GP referral and with shorter waits. Check in advance whether a private diagnosis will be accepted for the support you need.
