Depression services — the landscape
NHS Talking Therapies
For mild to moderate depression you can refer yourself to NHS Talking Therapies. Services offer CBT, behavioural activation, counselling and guided self-help.
Specialist NHS care
For more severe or persistent depression, your GP can refer you to a community mental health team for longer-term therapy, psychiatric assessment or medication review.
Private therapy
Private therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists usually offer faster access and more choice over the type and frequency of treatment. Costs differ by provider.
