Bipolar disorder services — the landscape

    NHS specialist care

Bipolar disorder is assessed and managed by psychiatrists. On the NHS this is usually through a GP referral to a community mental health team.

    Ongoing management

Treatment centres on medication with regular review, supported by structured psychological approaches such as psychoeducation or CBT adapted for bipolar disorder.

    Private psychiatry

Private psychiatrists usually offer faster assessment and longer appointments. Shared care with your GP would need to be arranged for NHS prescribing.

Good to know about mental health

Not always. NHS Talking Therapies (IAPT) accepts self-referrals for common issues like anxiety and depression — no GP visit needed. For specialist NHS care (CMHT, psychiatry) you usually do need a GP referral. Private therapists and psychiatrists accept patients directly.
